My 2 yr old loves her homemade maraca. You need construction paper, crayons, empty & clean 1 liter plastic soda bottles with the labels pulled off, dry peas or beans a funnel, Elmer's glue and super glue.

Cut the construction paper to a size that will fit around the body of the soda bottle. Have the kids draw on the construction paper. Use the Elmer's glue to glue their art to the bottle. Put the funnel on the bottle and let them put about 1/2 cup of the peas/beans in (just make sure they don't try to eat them) then put the super glue around the top of the bottle and screw on the cap tightly (super glueing it keeps them from being able to twist it off and put it or the peas/beans in their mouths and choke). Let dry over night and the next day they have a pretty maraca. You could also make homemade play dough. They love to get that all over their hands and if they eat it it wont hurt them.

I'll be curious to see how people answer this, too! We've had luck with those big pads of paper, because you don't have to worry about the paper slipping away from them. The Crayola Tadoodles are the preferred crayon because they are easy to hold: http://www.crayola.com/products/list.cfm?categories=BEGIN... Though they still want to eat the tips, so you have to watch 'em! Supervised, stickers to put on the paper are always a big hit.

Check out the art section in Target and they have some of those kits where the markers only mark on the special paper and finger paints that work the same way. Those are also pretty good.

Try tracing their hands onto the paper and then letting them scribble and stick stickers. All art is going to pretty much an introductory activity at this point.

Use instant pudding to finger paint. Paper torn pictures: just have them tear strips & glue down. Decorate cookies or bread cut with cookie cutters, use peanut butter, butter, cream cheese, etc & decorate with sprinkles, raisons, m&ms etc. Paint the sidewalk with regular paint brushes and water with food coloring. Just for some fun!!

Hi K.,

Check out Take Your Pix board book photo albums at www.boardbookalbums.com . I started the company to provide my young daughter a photo album that she could handle and not destroy. It's also fun for craft projects and you and the little ones could decorate with stickers, stamps or markers. Kids this age LOVE photos, especially those of themselves and loved ones. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas!
