Anyone Had a Child Allergic to Formula?

I'm almost exclusively breastfeeding my almost 5 month old daughter. Because I was starting to worry about not having enough milk, we opted to supplement once with a milk-based formula (she had shown no previous allergies). She seemed fine until her stool the next day had a few teeny strands of blood (very teeny, classic of milk allergy which my son had). She only had one diaper with that reaction and I immediately went off dairy. With my older son, I also went off soy, but I wanted to start one thing at a time. We go for a week, diapers are fine. She is fine. We try to introduce another formula, this time soy-based. She seems great. Next day, diapers appear normal although I possible saw one little strand of blood (very tiny, I looked again and couldn't find it so possibly I am imagining things). Of course, I have contacted the doctor and am awaiting consultation, but I was curious if anyone had ever had something similar, where maybe it isn't the food I'm eating, but the formula itself (like corn syrup or whatever else is in formulas these days). If anyone has had a similar experience, I would appreciate any information I can get. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for their comments and advice! I do need to supplement because I work full time and sometimes, despite pumping and nursing regularly, I don't have enough. She does have a mild milk protein allergy (this is not a lactose intolerance fyi) so I will cut it out of my diet. I did cut out soy as well for my son but our doctor said for our daughter that does not appear to be necessary.

My son, too. We put him on Neocate at about 4-5 months, and the difference was remarkable. He had very tiny traces of blood in his stool as well, but the doctor said that sometimes after having breastmilk, some babies do have a tough time with soy or just regular dairy from mom. I too, tried cutting out both, but the Neocate option, was ultimately best....Good Luck!

Have you tried a skin test (homemade)? My son is allergic to lactose (we believe, blood test results to come). He has a skin reaction to milk and cheese. That his how I discovered it, he put his hand in some cottage cheese and broke out in hives.
I had another friend who had a daughter who had blood in stool. She rubbed the formula on her skin and saw why...she broke out in a rash too. Obviously, you only need a drop to see a reaction.
Just a thought. Good luck.

Yes my youngest son was allergic to formula, we tried them all. after my 9th mo of breastfeeding my supply started to dwindle so needed to supplement. He also had alot of other allergies to foods so we took him to a pediatric allergist and were prescribed neocate formula w/c you can also buy online as well as thru your pharmacy. He did very well w/ this although the taste was something he needed to get use to.
Goodluck, hope this helps

My son went on Similac Allimentum for his first year. I had to stop nursing at 5 weeks. Only then was he totally fine. By age 1, he had no allergies and was fine. He had blood in his stool too. Very scary.

If you want the recipe for a homemade rice based formula, sent me an email. I got the recipe from a doctor.
