PLEASE HELP US! This is so embarassing girls! My husband has a really big problem with underarm odor, as most men do, BUT we cannot find a product that he is no allergic to. I have countless full containers of once or twice used products...His underarm area will break out in a rash or sometimes hives. He is embarassed and wears powders such as gold bond to help, but there has to be a product out there that will work for him/us. Any advice is greatly appreciated! I love this site! Thanks in advance.

I typed "deodorant" into the search box on the peoplespharmacy.com, and there were many alternatives listed that people use when they can't use traditional deodorant, including: milk of magnesia, rubbing alcohol, listerine, Dentarome toothpaste, zinc oxide (diaper rash cream), baking soda, etc. Good luck!

Your husband may have a metal allergy. He may, in fact, be allergic to aluminum, found in all antiperspirants. Aluminum's one of many metals I am allergic too....

If so, his ONLY option is a deoderant, without the antiperspirant. Personally, I like Arm&Hammer....but there are many out there.... he may want to be allergy tested, asking specifically for metal testing since this is an ongoing issue.

Also, has he seen a dr about it? Excessive odor/sweat can be indicative of heart disease and other diseases/risk factors/etc..... I'd start with a dr's opinion....

Good luck!

My father and I both have this problem. We are allergic to the aluminum that is in antiperspirants. My Dad uses Tussy and it works for him but not me. I use a natural crystal deodorant that I get at CVS. It used to only come in crystal form and you had to wet it before applying. Now it comes in a roll-on also. It seems to have a cummulative effect. I used to use it every day but now I only need it once a week or so. It doesn't stop the sweating much but it does keep the odor away. I also don't shave my armpits because that just opens up the skin and allows odor causing bacteria to grow and smell.

My uncle used a home made deoderant. Here's a smiliar recipe...

Natural Deodorant Recipe
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup corn starch
1/4 cup baking soda
Measure all three ingredients into a small saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the coconut oil melts and the ingredients are combined. Pour the liquid into the container of your choice. An old, empty stick deodorant container works well. Allow the mixture to cool and solidify, either at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Apply to underarms daily. During warm weather, keep your deodorant in the refrigerator or it may melt.

Deodorant Scented with Essential Oils
The deodorant will be virtually unscented, with a slight coconut scent. To add a pleasant natural fragrance, use essential oils. Experiment to find a signature scent that suits you. Some oils to try include rose, lavender, ylang ylang, bergamot, and jasmine. You can also add tea tree oil for scent.

Hi G.,

DH had the same problem. He can use deoderant, but not anti-perspirant. He uses Old Spice High-Endurance Pure Sport and doesn't have a problem with it. It is deoderant only. Another option might be one of the crystals you can get at the health food stores.

Good luck!!

Hi G., I can completely relate to your husbands ordeal. I have dealt with this problem for years. I tried everything under the sun from natrual to name brands and had no luck with any. Until I lived in california and came across a certain salt crystal that does the trick. It also contains aloe to help soothe as well. I have recently opened a boutique ( Belle Boutique) in Clemmons and carry these deoderants. This is the very reason I opened the Boutique and carry natural, organic products, for the health of woman and men. I also feel every woman should use these deoderants because they don't contain lead. Lead can be very harmful to the body. Let's face it when you start to pick apart our cosmetics and look at the chemical content it can be scary.I just recently wrote an article for thriftyu.com that has more detailed info on these deoderants. just look under Belle Boutique.
hope this helps,
C.

I used to have the same problem as a teenager. I outgrew it for some reason. My armpits would get so bad I would break out into blisters. It was so disguting and very painful. I started using something made with rock salt called DeoKrystal. They had two or three different kinds. A spray, a stick and something you added water to and then swiped on your pits. I used the one you put water on. It worked so well and I smelled great. Good luck.

This happens to me if I use deo with mica or silica in it. It's a little hard to find one without it - even the aluminum free ones sometimes have it. I would definitely try the natural ones though, if you haven't already. Just really watch the ingredients. Also, you can buy clorophyll tablets at the health food store that help eliminate body odor from the inside out. Good luck!

Wow! I thought my husband was the only one with this problem!

He can only wear deoderant. Otherwise his pits break out and his skin peals. He also has sensative skin so he can only wash with Dove Products.

I would stick to only deoderant products and look online at Trader Joe's or other natural food stores.

Underarm rashes are a notorious symptom. They sometimes are the only sign of more serious illnesses like cancer. I knew a woman who had an underarm rash that would come and go and it turned out to be breast cancer. It can also be a symptom of hypothyroidism or even HIV.

Sometimes it is just an allergy and it can be treated with cortizone and even oral prednizone if severe enough. He definately needs to see his doctor to rule out something more serious and maybe get a prescription steroid.

Tom's of Maine is chemical free and may work for him. I'm sensitive to some chemicals and use their toothpaste. No more cancer sores. You can get it at the Rainbow's on Charlestown Rd.

My husband is allergic to Anti-persperints and can only use products that are identified only as Deodorant. It is kind of hard to find but Speed Stick has a couple of products that are just deodorant. You may also want to try "Certain Dry". It is a product that reduces the sweat glands in your underarms so that you don't sweat under there and therefore aren't stinky. You use it at night before you go to bed. I am actually using it now because I sweat a lot and it has been working great. You should be able to get it at yoru grocery store or pharmacy.

Hi G.,

You've already gotten a lot of responses - but I wanted to let you know that I have the same problem. Years ago, my mom found the crystal and it's been SUCH a blessing! It doesn't keep you from sweating... so as long as he doesn't mind damp armpits... it WILL keep him from smelling! :-) I've been able to find it at CVS, Walgreens, etc... in the same aisle with the regular products, usually on the bottom shelf. I've used it for about 15 years now. People who are also concerned about cancer issues from deodorent products use it. I hope he finds some relief... I know how miserable those rashes are! Good luck!

I would try vinegar. I know may not smell that great but it is a natural anti-persperant and it will only smell for about 5 minutes plus if he uses cologne, it will cover it as the vinegar will fade. My twins are 13 yo and their little boy homones have kicked in with a vengance. They need all the help they can get. They would stink so bad that you could somtimes smell them when they walked in the room. Of course they develop at different rate. The first one would stink so bad...he ws th guinea pig becaus once we finally figured out what to do, the other one started with the death odor. They would sometimes take a vinegar bath and lay so that only their head was out of the water. This helped tremendously. Now their hormones have calmed down a bit I guess cause it is not as big a problem as it once was. Now off the shelf works fine. Every once and a while, they have flare ups and just wet a rag with vinegar, wipe under arms, let air dry, add off shelf stuff for the good smell and all is well! Good luck!

DH has the same problems and one that he has found that works for him is Hunter's Specialties® Scent-A-Way™ Anti-Perspirant. He discovered that it didn't have any negative effects when he started using it during hunting season a few years ago. You can typically find it at Wal-Mart in the Sporting Goods area during hunting season, but it can also be found at Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mountain, or Cabela's.

I would recommend trying a natural/organic deodorant. My husband used to break out in a rash from deodorants. The only product that works (successfully) for him is Tom's of Maine. It is way more expensive than standard deodorants, but it definitely works for him. You should be able to find it in your grocery store.

Good Luck!

My husband and myself have experienced bing allergic to deodorants. I had to make sure I had unscented deodorants. My husband always was worse than I was. He tried Gold Bond (try an unscented baby powder) but that only made it worse because it was too strong. We also found out that his rashes were actually a fungus and had to have a medicated cream prescribed by doctors and they also suggested a dermatologist which could prescribe a deodorant.

I think he should see a doctor to find out what exactly he is allergic to, and to make sure the excessive sweating isn't a sign of something else.

As far as what to try, it's going to depend on what's causing the rashes. It might the be metals, or one particular chemical. Natural products are not guaranteed not to cause rashes, either, so be careful with those. If he's allergic to something that is naturally occurring, he may continue to have problems even with natural products (though if he's allergic to the chemicals, natural products would be the way to go.) Natural does not equal safe or side-effect free, though.

He should talk about the issue with his doctor who can find the cause of the rashes and maybe prescribe a prescription antiperspirant/deodorant, or can prescribe something he can use in conjunction with regular antiperspirants to prevent or combat the rash.

Hi G.,

You should go to a health food/supplement store. Get Crystal deoderant - there are multiple brands of this product. Get one that is fragrance free. It comes in spray, roll on, or solid. Its a mineral and it kills bacteria on the skin that causes oder. But it is natural and should not cause any rashes or harmful effects. The people at the store should be able to tell you more about it.

Also he may want to take an internal deoderizer. Nature's Way makes one with chlorophyl in a capsule and YerbaPrima makes one with mushrooms in a capsule. They work from the inside out to deoderize the body.

Good luck,
E.

My husband had the same problem years ago. I am not sure which one it is, but he can only buy either anitpersperant or deoderant. Most of the ones at the stores are combined both antipersperantand deoderant, but Right Guard (I think that's the one I buy him) has them seperate. If he used the combined one it makes him break out and sweat worse. You may have already tried this, but maybe not and maybe it will help!

Hi G., you may want to try Melaleuca's antipersperant/deoderant or just their deoderant. This company uses more natural ingredients ... no harsh chemicals or preservatives. Also, I have found that if you just brush a little of the Melaleuca oil under your arm ... you do not have body odor even for a couple of days with out a shower. What causes the odor is bacteria. Melaleuca oil kills bacteria. It is a very natural deoderizer. You can check out their products at www.melaleuca.com/ps If you would like to get the preferred customer price (30-40%) discount just let me know!

G., a couple added comments...

Not all aluminum is under suspect - antiperpirants on the store shelf and all the scary research is with synthetic aluminum...so if he cannot stand the sweating...a natural antiperpirant is worth a try. Natural aluminum in natural antiperspirants are larger molecules and not easily absorbed. Danielle suggested Melaleua's...which was a good working (!!)recommendation. But let me add one more detail.

Those that suggested that the odor is bacteria are right on! My husband was so bad until we learned this...he uses Melaleuca antiperperant soap in the shower(don't use the national brands...too harsh and unhealthy)and his problem was taken care of...
