Air Travel with a 2 Yr Old & Motion Sickness???

Hi there,

I am flying for about 3-4 hr flight with my 2 yr old daughter. I'm nervous because I don't have a DVD player this time. Also she is very difficult/high maintenance in the car. I think it's due to discomfort from motion sickness. Ever since she was born, she will only sleep in the car if she is completely exhausted. So now we are on our way to a wedding and I would love some advice natural or otherwise for a 2 yr old. Also, any age appropriate, compact activity suggestions would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance,
S.

For entertainment I bring my digital camera loaded with photos I took of the kids and they love flipping through them. I also bring my video camera that I taped various things of them that the watch. I can get them to sit quiet for at least 45 mins at a time watching all this and I have twin boys!
Good luck!

I don't know about the motion sickness, but a little magnadoodle, books and playdoh keep my DD entertained for hours on a plane. Good luck!

I would suggest giving her 1.5-2 teaspoons of childrens Benadryl about a half an hour before the flight. This should make he sleep peacefully thru the flight. My pediatrician has okayed this for my two year old but you may want to check with your own pedi first. Good luck!

I would ask your pediatrician about motion sickness medicine.....you won't need the Benadryl, since Dramamine causes drowsiness anyways, plus the added benefit of aliviating her motion sickness. I assume she has her own airplane seat at her age? She'll be able to sleep better if she gets drowsy.......

Hi S.,

I have travelled a lot with my 2 preschoolers, and what I have found to be the best distractions are snacks and books. I am not usually someone that gives their children a lot of candy, but on a flight, it's all about survival. I usually pack some crackers, one type of candy, and some raisins or Cheerios. All things that take time to eat. Perhaps you could let her pick out a brand new book just for the flight. My children loved Sandra Boynton's books when they were that age. I also bought them both little Doodle Pros (about $6 at Wal-Mart), which are great because they aren't messy and the "pen" is attached, so you aren't constantly picking up dropped crayons. They love to watch me draw their favorite animals with it too. I also let them carry on their own tiny backpacks that I put their toys and some wet-wipes in. As for the motion sickness, I would talk to your pediatrician for something OTC.

If you aren't driving after you land, I think the best thing you can do for yourself is have some wine on the plane! (A flight attendant strongly suggested it to me once when she could see the stress all over my face.) It will make you much more relaxed and you won't care so much about the stares from the other passengers when your little one gets cranky.:)

Best wishes for a peacefull flight!

My son gets terribly motion sickness in the car, (he's now 5)to the point where he would throw up if we were traveling in the rain. I use the elastic wrist bands on him, I think they help. (I got them at Walgreens, I think).

I also recommend letting her snack the whole trip, and lollipops in your purse as an emergency measure. (they can help with ear popping) I have three children, and most of the time we have had really successful plane trips. I also tend to pack a little backpack of new things, like little notebooks or coloring books or stickers, things that my kids have never seen before. It's fun.

She'll pick up on your stress, so be positive, and know that whatever comes up, you'll be able to handle it!
Good luck!

I'm not sure about the motion sickness, but as for activities/toys... I would bring stickers, crayons (you can trace her hand, she can trace yours and can trace toys you have with you), little containers of playdough, some of her favorite books. Maybe get a new book or toy to have her open on the plane. A book that has flaps to open, my 2 yr. old son loves to find what is behind the flaps! Maybe have her sit by the window, my son loves looking out at everything until we get up in the air. And don't forget her special snuggly so she can snuggle. Good luck!

This may sound very odd but bare with me. I took photos of her favorite things, stuffies, her in her comfy spot on the couch, her with cookie goo all over her face, the two of them playing with jello, the kitty, snuggles from mom, dad etc. and laminated them. then rounded the corners and punched holes in them. I put them on a secure ring( a carabeaner would do) that was large enough so she could not swallow it. Hint, put pictures back to back for twice as many for the same price of laminating. I still have her ring of favorite pics....10 years later.

Best of luck....enjoy the wedding.

My 4 yr old has motion sickness issues as well. We have family living like 9 hrs away so we needed something to make the trip easier. We use these bracelets made by Sea-Band for motion sickness and they work well! You just have to make sure that you put them on the pressure points in the wrist but so far so good for us! I think my mother in law got them from a magazine but I saw them at Walgreens (or any other drug store)... check the internet and good luck!

Hi S.,
When I have gone on a trip with my little ones before I would bring crayons and a coloring book, snacks and maybe even a couple of new (small) toys that they have never seen before to keep them busy. Those have worked for me. Hope that helps!

S.,

If your daughter has her own seat she should be a lot more comfortable. CARES harness makes it so the kid can sit in the seat and not have to use the car seat which then would give her enough more room/space to be comfortable.
Activities, coloring books, colored pencils, water with water (bring a small container and only have the very bottom of the container filled with water), new cheap books from the dollar store or the dollar aisles at Target, and maybe a new toy, even play-doh can be played with on the tray tables. I've also found that a walk up and down the aisle helps too. Bring snacks for her, don't rely on the airport or airlines for something that she might like. I find nutra-grain bars, dried fruit and fingers foods work the best. Also chocolate milk is a favorite treat only to be had in cases of planes and trips in our house.

Good luck,

I just did it with my 18 month old. Not as bad as I thought. I did it solo wo with your husband it should work well.
GUMMIES were our choice for take off and landing. Don't show her until you need them. The surprise effect is great.
Washable markers worked the best. Pull the tray down in front of you, let her play and wipe away when done. Post-it pads work well too! All you have to do is clean them up. Books and cuddlies are good but short lived.

Relax and enjoy the ride and try to pack as much as you can in your luggage cause you will have several inspection to go through. I brought to much stuff on the Plane and I paid for it.

I also had back up of Benadrille and Tylenol but didn't need it.
