9-36 Month "Next Step" Formula for 12 Mos + What Do You Think?

My son is about to turn one and I am considering trying out the Similac Advance Go and Grow formula to prior to the transition to cow's milk. I would also like to continue to supplement a bottle or two a day once we are on whole milk. In logic, with the added nutrients, it makes sense to me. Has anyone used this past 12 months? Any thoughts? Or is it just a marketing ploy to keep us on formula? The added nutrients are more than regular formula, but not by that much. I'm sure it's more of whatever growing toddlers need. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

So What Happened?

So I spoke with my pediatrician and a few other moms and decided against continuing with the Similac Go and Grow formula. We had to use formula a little longer because my son got pneumonia and they said to stop lactose until he was better, but we are now on whole milk and even though the price of milk has gone up, it's a lot cheaper than formula. BTW the Doctors basically said that it was not necessary for the extra calories and that he should be eating more table foods and if anything to supplement with pediasure or something like that and not the formula. Thanks everyone for all your advice!!!

It's a marketing ploy. I asked my pediatrician about it, and he said the very same thing. Formula is for infants, not toddlers, and this is a way Similac, Enfamil, etc. can hang onto customers. As long as your son drinks enough milk and eats healthy foods, he'll get the vitamins and minerals he needs.

I actually read somewhere that it is not only a marketing ploy, but it contains more sugar. There were a couple of other things about it as well, but my memory isn't what is used to be!

C.,

First off, why do you feel like a single parent when you are married? It takes two to tango and it sounds like you are working as well. So, what is the deal?

Secondly, I agree with you in the fact that it is a marketing ploy. I have a 2 1/2 year old and after 12 months, we went off the regular Enfimil formula( powder) and went straight to whole milk as well as cereals, snacks for babies and such. As she began her 13 and 14 month and so forth we gave her 3 mild bottles per day, one in the morning, one for lunch/nap and one for bed and she also ate real food. Cut up meat, cheese, yogurt, and such.

I agree with the other moms that it is a marketing ploy. I worked for a few years at a pediatrician's office and they felt that the best thing for 12+ months was whole milk. My son is a very active little guy and tends to be on the smaller side and our pediatrician still feels that he gets all he needs from whole milk. I wouldn't waste any more money on formula.
Good luck,
J.

Don't waste your money. Just start the switch over to milk. If your son is drinking at least 17 ounces of milk a day he'll be getting enough vitmain D, and if he is eating a good variety of food he should have all the nutrtion he needs from that. They do have infant vitmains (not sure if the doc has to give a Rx) if he is a very finicky eater.

Most vitamins are recommended for children 2 and older. A great one is called might-a-mins, it is a powder that is dissolved in water to make it isotnic. It tastes like orange soda to me (yum) and it also has probiotics in it. That is important to me since my daughter has been on a lot of antibiotics in the last 6 months (pneumonia twice!)
