My 5 1/2 daughter school called last monday saying my daughter wasn't feeling good and that she said her head hurts. I went and checked her out. I Brought her home and gave her some motrin and she laid down for awhile and got up and felt fine.Well this afternoon it started again. She was outside with her daddy, sister, brother and uncle playing basketball. She was running around laughing then she came in and said her head hurts. I asked her if anyone hit her in the head and she said no. She laid on the couch got up and threw up some of her lunch. Once she laid down for awhile i got her up and gave her bath and she said her head doesn't hurt anymore but her stomach. She had some problems before of having a sensitive stomach where she got sick and threw up but never complained about her head hurting. She started basketball with her sister and brother about 3 weeks ago.I don't know if its the running or what that is causing the headaches or something else. She's on zyrtec for her allergies and she had a physical before she started kindergarten in august of 2012. Her vision and everything came back good. I'm going to call her doctor in the morning and see what they want done. None of my other kids had complained about their head hurting. I guess i'm worried. She ate supper and is back to herself again. She doesn't have no fever, cough or nothing else if that helps any. Had anyone had their child suffer from headaches or is this normal?(of what i read online.)
Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the feedback. I will get a headache sometimes but not that bad. My aunt gets bad migraines which requires her to go to the hospital to get treated for it. The neastest children's hospital is almost 2 hours away. I'm going to call the dr in the morning and go from there, Hopefully its nothing bad but that they can find out whats wrong with her.

Edit: I Got ahold of the nurse and they want me to bring her in the morning and get her checked out.

Ask her if she saw flashes of light in her vision. It could be an ocular headache.

Dehydration can cause headaches.
Food allergies can cause headaches.
Seasonal allergies can cause headaches.

She may need more than Zyrtec for her allergies. have her tested to see if her allergies have changed or gotten worse and see if she will be a "contender" for the allergy shots or the stuff under the tongue.

My son suffers from "eye aches" - his right eye literally will hurt him to the point where he can and will cry. He has been to an ophthalmologist, optometrist, ENT, Pediatrician and has been to Johns Hopkins Villmer eye institute, Children'ts National Center and had an MRI under sedation. His eyes are perfect, no tumors, no visible problems, blood tests come back normal as well.

The only thing that we can think is ocular migraines and I'm not going to put my son on the medication that Children's recommended as it's REALLY potent. He doesn't have these every day. We are tracking them...

GOOD LUCK!!

That was about the age I started getting headaches. If she keeps complaining of them, keep a log of what she ate that day, what she was doing, the allergy medication taken, etc. You'll usually find a common trigger and hopefully that will help manage them. Make sure she is drinking plenty of water, too. That can set off my headaches.

Do YOU suffer from headaches? Migraines? They can be hereditary.

My seven year old has had one migraine...it happened when she was five. She did throw up.

Headaches can be triggered by strenuous activity and exposure to bright light (you said she was playing outside.)

No harm in getting her checked out by her doctor, but she probably just had a headache.

My son has suffered from headaches since he was 4. Magnseium (sp) is what the doctor added to his vitamins it seems to make them appear less often as well as a reduction in nitrates. I think I posted about this when he got his and got some good help/answers too you may want to check it out.

My son started getting headaches about 4 1/2. We have noticed most of them happen in the summer months, but he will literally have a headache and either throw up or be down for the nights. There have been times last summer where I picked him up at 4:30, he passed out on the way home from a headache and slept until the next morning. Sometimes he throws up, sometimes not. We've make sure that he eats regularly in the hot months (something he doesn't like to do) and drink plenty of water also. We had to work with his daycare and make sure they reminded him to drink often when they were out playing.

I'd take her in and ask your regular ped to test her for strep. That's easy, and if it IS strep, you can solve the problem by giving her antibiotics. Sometimes strep presents as an upset stomach and a headache, to boot.

If strep comes back negative, you should do higher level investigating. Do you have a children's hospital in your area? If you do, I'd get an evaluation from them. A pediatric opthamologist should see her, and you should also consult a ped neurologist.

I wouldn't let this go. You need to make sure that she doesn't have a brain tumor - it's really important to rule that out.

Ocular migraines certainly are a possibility. I have had ONE, and that was when I had 3 hours sleep and had to get up to drive to the school to pick up a group of kids to take them home from the post-prom party. It was 3 am, and the way it presented was that my left eye was blurry. It ddidn't stop being blurry for 30 minutes. I'm lucky that it didn't hurt. But it was kind of scary, to be honest.

Anyway, I'd really try to get to the bottom of this. If they do figure out that it's an ocular migraine, perhaps you all can figure out what the triggers are.

Good luck,
Dawn
