15 Month Old Not Eating but Has Diarrhea

My 15 month old son has not been eating the last few days. He will take a taste here and there but not eat at his normal rate and as much as he usually do. He has also had about 3 to 4 diarrhea diapers a day for the last week. I am still nursing so he is getting some nourishment that way. Any suggestions on what to give him to drink or eat? I normally just give him water, but I would like to see him drinking more fluids now.

thanks

So What Happened?

Shortly after I posted I went to the store and bought pedialyte, applesauce, and bananas. He loved the pedialyte. I was excited because my daughter has never liked it. He ate a couple banana slices. Of course he nursed....I'm just so glad I'm still nursing! I have wondered if he is teething because he does eat less when he is getting new ones and has diarrhea, but his normal drooling is not there. He only has his 2 yr molars left to get.

Thanks moms!

Sounds like he's probably teething. Both my boys went through similar cycles. Bananas are sweet and help the diarrhea. Try some teething tablets. Breastmilk is a wonderful way to get fluids into your baby and it's soothing... Fluids are fluids and pedialyte is actually water, sugar, and salt. Water for hydration, sugar for blood sugar levels, and salt for water retention. Most kids don't like it however, so just give additional breastmilk(most nutritious drink out there!) if that's what he wants. And take heart! By the time you try all these things, it will have passed and he'll probably have cut a tooth. :-) Best of luck to you!

see, your breastmilk is not helping. since he's 15 months old, hence should be eating bananas, applesauce, crackers and toast that is all you should give. for liquid offer water or watered-down gatorade or pedialyte.
it will only be a few days and he'll go back to his usual diet, but right now you need to control his diarrhea.
another thing you could give is rice. just plain rice, no oil, no salt, nothing. he will not eat a whole meal, but a bite here and a bite there. the whole purpose of the BRAT diet is to 'stiffen' the food in his tummy. do not breastfeed or give milk or milk products until everything has been cleared.

Highly recommend BRAT diet as previously mentioned. If you go to long without solid food which he is used to in his diet now you can get something called starvation diarrhea and feeding him the brat diet will help get his digestive enzymes back in working order. Found this out when 1 of my sons was 1 1/2 years old from the Dr. because I wasn't aware of starvation diarrhea until then. Younger kids more prone to it than adults. Hope he feels better soon!

I agree with the BRAT diet, along with breastfeeding. Pedialyte is good to help prevent dehydration. Clear liquids is what my doc tells me (sprite, gatorade, lemonade, etc) but I usually give my son pedialyte rather than these super sugary drinks.

If you can get him to eat, try just giving him items from the BRAT diet ... bananas, rice, apples (or applesauce), toast. This is supposed to be a binding diet. Definitely more liquids, perhaps breastfeeding more. Good luck.
