13 Days Late, and Negative Hpt's?

First off let me start by saying that my spouse and I are currently trying for baby number 1 (I'M SO EXCITED). Well the first day of my last period was February 21, 2009 and ended the 24th (4 days) which now makes me 13 days passed my missed period for March. I took an HPT on the 4th and 5th day of my missed period but of course they were negative. I went to my OBGYN on the 6th day and had a blood test done (still waiting on my results, i don't know whats going on with that!). I finally broke down and took two more HPT's on the 31st and the 1st...still negative. Before my period was actually due I had back pain which has just now here in the past few days gone away. My nipples started getting sore a few days after my period was due, and then a few days following that the whole breast began to get sore. They seem to be getting more sore by the day. My spouse says that my nipples look like they're are almost turning like a purple color and my areola's are getting wider. He has also pointed out the veins that are darker and running through my areola and breast. So my question is, is my body just playing mean tricks or is there still a chance that I could be pregnant? If I were to be pregnant, then I should be a little over 5 weeks.

What can I do next?

I was pregnant with my first and a similar thing was happening to me. The pg test were very very faint. It ended that I was pregnant but the embryo was no developing and I had a miscarriage. Every month after that I thought I was pg and even had a pos hpt, but then ended up a neg one the next day.
The more I obsessed with it the more I felt that I was pregnant. Until it just happened

S.,

I'm gonna stay optimistic for you and tell you, you still might be pregnant. I only had one pregnancy test come back positive and it was about the same time you're talking about here. Some women just have low hormone levels and it's hard to detect. But the same things happened with my breasts. And I became nauseated.... You doctor's blood work should confirm it! Good Luck!!!

April, any news?? There can always be false negatives and it can happen for a while because your hormone levels are not high enough yet...hope you get your blood tests back soon, that should tell you most definitely if you are or not!

From experience, do not stress out to much, because sometimes your boby can play tricks on you. If you just releax and let it happen it will. Stress can cause missed periods and other symptoms.

Sounds like me when I was pregnant for my first. Couldn't get a positive HPT until I was 2 months along.

Remember, HPT positives are 99% reliable and HPT negatives are 50%...

Yes, you could be pregnant. My friend just delivered a baby girl, and she didn't find out she was pregnant until she was 30 weeks (!!) along. She took a few home pregnancy tests along the way, all of which came back negative. She's always had a tummy, so that wasn't a clue. I asked her didn't she feel the baby move, and she thought it was indigestion! She didn't find out for sure until she had to have bloodwork done, and that came back positive. She's in the 1% of people that the HPT doesn't work.

It could also be psychosomatic, as there were several times I would have sworn that I was pregnant, and then got my period a few days later. Sometimes you want something so much, your body cooperates.

So get the doctor to give you the results of that blood test - it shouldn't take too long! And start taking your prenatal vitamins if you haven't already.

Good luck!

I would say this is the exception to the rule but I know it happens because it happened to me. I was 8 weeks pregnant with my first before I found out I was pregnant. My blood test finally showed me pregnant with blood that was drawn at 7.5 weeks. I had been tested in a doctors office at 5, 6, and 7.5 weeks with urine tests, and a prior blood test at 6 weeks that were all negative. Oh, and I had been told two months before that I was infertile and would require fertility drugs to conceive. By the time I knew I was pregnant (at 8 weeks) I was absolutely stunned, and I had lost 27 pounds due to illness. I know it's not common but it happens. My mom had the same experience.

I'm sorry to hear it came back negative....in the meantime try to stay positive and stress free.

I went off the pill when my husband and I decieded to start trying. My body was readjusting and I had no idea when I ovulated. I was 6 weeks late - no symptoms - and my Dr. still told me that it was ok that I may skip a period or be late during this readjustment time without being prego. However, I never did get my period - I found out 2 weeks later that indeed I was pregnant via HPT. I had decided to take another test when I was 8 weeks late because my breasts had "symptoms" and they were sore.

I wish you the best!

Hi S.,

I hope by now you have some news about what is going on. Have no fear my pregnancy was detected the same way. I have signs of my period and when to buy meds and nothing came. My back hurt, nipples were soar but nothing came. It was not until I went to the doctor I was six weeks pregnant by then. My baby is termed the miracle baby because I have female troubles. All the best to you looking forward to hearing from you whatever your tests reveals.

My pregnancy tests always came back negative until about 6 weeks. I would swear I was pregnant and would take a bunch of tests. Finally around 6 weeks the tests would show up with the faintest lines and I would question it because they were so light. Eventually I would go out and get the test that says pregnant or not pregnant so that I knew for sure. Your symptoms certainly sound as though you are pregnant, but I thought blood tests are supposed to be super accurate. Are you usually late or on time with your period? Hopefully, your doc will be able to get to the bottom of this. Good Luck and I hope your wish of a baby comes true!!!

My experience has been that usually home pregnancy tests are very reliable during the first weeks of conceptions. The feeling like your breasts are out of control are definitely a good give away that you are prenant as well as a missed period. Give yourself another week to take the HTP again. If if comes back negative, it could be wishful thinking but that doesn't mean that you can't get pregnant in the near future.

Please don't focus too much of your attention to getting pregnant though. All of my friends who were anxious to get pregnant, had a hard time concieving. Meanwhile, my friends who basically took life as it came (no pun intended), had no problem getting pregnant. I'm pretty sure there is a reason for that.

Wishing you all the best of luck.

This happened a couple times to me. My husband and I call them phantom pregnancies. But who knows what our miraculous bodies are doing. If you are not pregnant, it's not because something could be wrong with you - 50% of all concieved babies don't make it to implantation. Though you are smart to be your own health advocate.
Or like some women have said, you made be pregnant but your hcg may be low.
It's a rollercoaster ride and many times I'd get so frustrated because it felt like I was crazy. Feel what you feel. It is your truth.
Good luck Sharron.

Good for you for seeing the doc to follow up. There COULD actually be something wrong, and it's sooooo refreshing when a pt is proactive. :) :) :)

That said...if nothing's wrong...here are a few other things to think about:

1) Some of us have more control over our autonomic responses then others. Ghandi could literally heat his feet up to over a hundred degrees when walking in the snow. I can slow my heart rate down to below forty if I concentrate on it. SOME women, when they strongly desire a child actually start lactating. (There is debate over whether or not this makes them more fertile or less...i THINK because it's roughly 50/50 on whether it's just their mammary glands, or their whole body...aka the body thinks it's pregnant so it can't actually get pregnant/natural birth control).

2) Most of us have had sex so often that we don't get that full/heavy/painful feeling in our breasts anymore when we're having (ahem, more to the point, AFTER) sex. However, if you're having sex a lot more frequently the simple act of friction + increased blood flow, + more often then usual can also cause those symptoms.

3) So many false negatives are rare, but I'll cross my fingers for you!! Good Luck!

S.,

One time when I was younger, I thought I was preggers and my OBGYN said that the mind can wholly convince the body that something is happening that is not. So, I had sore breasts and even had lower back pain for like a month. It wasn't until I had peed on 20 HPT's and finally got the negative blood test back that my body stopped fooling around. Call you OBGYN and get a straight answer on thet test. At 5 weeks, your HPT should come back positive.

Good Luck!

Hi S., When I got pregnant with my first child, my daughter, I took a HPT when I was 3 days late, and it was negative. A week later when my period still didn't start, I took another HPT and it was positive! The only pregnancy symptom I had while pregnant with her was sore breasts and nipples, and my veins on my breasts and upper thighs became more obvious, nothing else! So, there is a chance you're pregnant! Be sure you take the HPT, first thing in the morning, with your first urine of the day, so the pregnancy hormone level will be high. Also follow up with your doctor for the blood test results. Just one question, are your periods regular or do you frequently have irregular/long cycles? Good luck with all...let us know what happens! Remember even if it doesn't happen this month, try not to be too disappointed, it will happen soon!!!

All signs indicate you are PG. The HPT's CAN make mistakes unless you buy the digital one which is very accurate. Go to your OB-GYN doctor. They will be able to tell you for sure (and for the record, they can do the urine sample and can confirm if you are PG when you are only TWO WEEKS along!). Your baby might be in the wrong area and that could be messing up the tests. This is something you do NOT want to wait on! Go see your doctor right away.

Hi S.,

I think you are with child! I have 3 beautiful daughters. This happened to me with my last 2 pregnanicies. Urine and blood tests, several each month would a come back neg. My last pregnancy took the longest to come back positive. My husband and I had been trying for 6 months. I had the same symptoms you did. I knew I was pregnant but all test said otherwise. Finally my doctor was about to put me on birth control to force my period to come. But luckily decided to do an ultrasound which confirmed I was almost 3 months along!!! I'm glad he made that decision! I now have a beautiful healthy 20 months old! goodluck

I had the same issues you had. All tests were negative and it finally showed up when was 7 weeks preggo and thought I had the flu, went to the doctor took a test and boom it was confirmed. OB/Gyn said that my hormonal levels were extremely low and that's why the HPT's were all negative. I had to take hormonal pills until i was 3 mos. We were excited to find out after trying for 5 years. I hope your preggo there's nothing like that soon-to-be mom feeling.
