Hi Moms,

My 12 year old son has been complaining that he has been feeling hot most of the time. When we are in the car together, he's too warm and wants the air conditioning on, which makes me cold. At home, it's been the same, he asks me to turn on the air conditoner when I feel cool. He says that the classrooms in school are too warm for him too. I'm just curious if any of you with teens have had this complaint. I will call the doctor if this continues. I appreciate any advice or sharing of experiences any of you have had.

What can I do next?

I would guess at two things.... he is dehydrated and needs to drink more water, and definitely not drink all those caffeinated ~lets have an early heart attack~ drinks, or two- he's turning into a man and has some hormonal changes happening.
Seriously though, he's probably dehydrated..... I would have him eat more fruits and make sure he's drinking five or six glasses of water a day.

Have you taken his temperature?

It could just be from his body going through changes. I am ALWAYS freezing, hubby and sister are ALWAYS hot.

i think that's normal, i remember FREEZING at school cause everyone was always hot, i'd be wearing a WINTER coat, in my in class, because all the chearleader's that tanned were "hot" and wearing speghettie straps (you get the point)

I agree with more water and hormones. Poor kid - I"m hot blooded too. It's a pain.

I'd suggest too that he wear layers. Short sleves with a hoodie and a jacket if necessary (not sure how cool it gets near you). Then he can peel off what he doesn't need. Also, I find that wearing sneakers make me so hot. Tell him not to wear socks and pick lighter shoes. He can kick them off if he gets hot.

Yup, welcome to puberty!!!

Mine often feels hot and often goes to bed with a ice gel pack on his neck. Its hormones - think hot flashes for us women later in life. LOL

I agree with the other poster - make sure he stays hydrated - if his body is putting off extra heat it will dry him out.

And for yourself bring a sweater along in the car...or do what I do - point all the air vents AT him.
