Our 10 week old baby girl has green mucousy poop, and this has been going on for almost a week now. After a day or two of this we called the doctor and she said it was probably the stomach flu that had been going around last week. We gave the doctor's office a follow-up call the next day (they asked us to do so), and they said we needed to bring her in to get checked out to be safe...they thought she may have rotavirus. I asked if we needed to bring in a sample of her green poop to be tested (I used to work in a lab, so I figured it would be a good idea) and they said that would be a good idea. Her test came back negative so that was good, so I guess it is the stomach flu.
Anyway, has anyone had a baby that had green mucousy poop that smells absolutely terrible, especially in the morning, and if so, how long did it last?
We took our little girl back to the doctor about her green poo. Her doctor was on vacation, so we saw another doctor and he ordered a bunch of test on her stool. So it has been my job to collect it all and get it in all the special containers (luckily I used to work in a lab, so I am not too grossed out, and have a better idea on what they need). In the mean time I have pretty much cut out dairy from diet just in case that is the cause of the green stuff. She appears to be healthy aside from the green goo according to the doctors, so that is good. That's all we have for now. Thanks for all our input!
yes, ive been there. Too much iron. My body tends to have high iron levels if I take a vitamin with iron in it. While breastfeeding my son , I was told to stay on my prenatals. His poop started the same thing. I went off my prenatals, he stopped pooping green within a day maybe two. His iron levels were too high also. Good luck. J.
My daughter had green leafy poop (kinda like spinach). Thought it might be foremilk/hindmilk issue. She also vomited a lot. Turns out she had Milk soy protein intolerance. Does much much better now that I have eliminated milk and soy. I think a lot of babies are sensitive to milk. Not necessarily allergic, but sensitive. Hope your little girl just has the flu and not MSPA, it's manageable but a pain in the a**!
If you are still nursing , I would make sure to eat as many bananas as you could stand and drink straight coke out of a can / non diet. Not sure why it works, but I know that my father in law; may he rest in peace; was an old country doctor. This is such a huge fix for whatever reason for anyone at the age to eat and drink by themselves for any virus/flu/stomach flu bug. Babies take in so much of what the mother eats, so I know it worked for my little ones , but then I was nursing.

Baby poop can be interesting, can't it! Our son used to have mucousy poop and excema patches on his skin. They determined he had a milk allergy. He is two now and was just tested again... still allergic. Hopefully, your daughter just has a stomach bug, but I wanted to let you know that mucous in the stool is one sign of a milk allergy. If you are breastfeeding, green poop can be normal. Mucousy poop usually means an allergy. Switch to soy formula or cut diary out of your diet since dairy is the most common allergy.
It's stomach flu virus. My 4 week old got it twice right along with my other two kids, age 2 and 3. Don't you just love this time of year?? Her normal poop is yellow and seedy since she's nursing, and when she had the stomach flu it was green and squirted and was liquidy/mucousy, and she also projectile-vommitted when she had it. Yeah I was glad when that was over, poor babies. And now they all three have RSV!!! it's that NASTY cold virus that can be dangerous for newborns breathing. can't WAIT til all this sickness is over!! puke, diarrhea, cough, fever, runny noses, congestion... ahh!
There is a virus that causes mucusy poop that is not rotovirus. I hate to say I can't remember what it's called, but it's highly contagious and affects the bowels. I would call your ped. and ask about that b/c it does require meds I believe. However, it still might not be that and could be a virus and you'd just have to wait and see...horrible, I know! ;)
And, even after saying all that, being that she's only 10 weeks old, it could be none of that and she's just still adjusting to life outside the womb! But, if it's still hanging around, I'd call back your doc!
My son had it and it turned out to be a milk allergy. We switched Dr's and the new one told us to try soy formula, one week later he had normal poops, was happier and started putting on weight.
We just went through this with both of my kids. It is a virus called norovirus(sp) basically the same virus that causes some types of food poisoning. However, unlike traditional food poisoning this is contagious. It seems like everyone in my town had it around the end of December. Unfortunately, in the young and the elderly, and anyone with a weakened immune system it can linger for up to two weeks. The stools do smell really bad with this and there is also vomiting in some. If you think she is getting at all dehydrated make sure you go to the hospital! Good luck!
my little boy is 6 months old and has gone through every shade and texture. i was told by the pediatrician thats its nothing to worry about unless it comes with a fever or other signs of infection. their little tummies still have a lot to get used to. i wouldnt worry to much but do watch f the mucous and allergy thing
My son had that for awhile too. I was breastfeeding and gave up milk, which helps a little. Then it kept happening. I contacted LaLeche and they thought he was only getting the foremilk and not the hindmilk. Turns out, I was over producing milk, therefore he was only getting the beginning part of my milk and not the end part. I had to only nurse on one side at a time to make sure he completely emptied one side and got the hindmilk. This improved everything!
When my 2 yr olds were sick w/the flu last year my peds nurse suggested giving them yogurt. It really helped and since they like it we eat it all of the time.
